Tips & Tricks: Bathroom Styling

22 May 2023

You’ve finally got the bathroom of your dreams! The tiles look amazing, your feature wall has the dreamiest of impacts, your vanity fits everything and more, but ... what now? How do we maximize style and comfort when it comes to our bathrooms. I’m here to tell you just that!

Bathrooms are typically quite cold and linear, especially a fully tiled space. The first step to accessorizing your new bathroom is to soften the lines and add some delicate comfort. As a foundation, I tend to always start with the towels. People forget that more often or not, our towels have a permanent place in our bathroom and just like any other accessory, they need to be thought through so we can maintain the style we thought so hard about when choosing our tiles at the beginning.

When we think about the colors of our towels (really, any accessory we bring in ) it’s important to remember one thing – balance! Balance is so important. When you bring any item into a room, you need to create balance. Balance in design, color, texture and size. Now this doesn’t mean we have to match everything, in fact, if we try and match up every item, the space becomes predictable.

When it comes to your colour palette, it's not just the tiles to consider, consider your tapware too! I recently styled one of the installations at our Lunn Ave store. The tiles were super impactful on their own, I didn’t want to take away from them with matching towels so I played around with plain white or black.. Black won, it really elevated the tapware choice and framed the green tiles perfectly. Sometimes, less is more.

If you have a (fabulously) busy patterned mosaic wall, it’s important to be aware of adding another pattern right next to it. The patterns can clash and draw attention away from the mosaic itself. Find a towel color that picks up the most dominant color in the mosaic, enhancing the intricate patterns rather than clashing.

Check out the striking newly installed tiles at our Mt Wellington store, even I got the memo that green is in!

When it comes to sticking to a consistent, balanced color palette, don’t be afraid to take a sample of your tile, paint swatch or tapware with you when shopping for your accessories! This makes the process so much easier and you’re able to see right away what works and what doesn’t.

Last week I hit the shops with my subways rattling around in the trolley, I was able to find the perfect navy towel amongst a sea of blue options because I could hold my tile up against it and determine the perfect match. This doesn’t just work for towels; you can find all your accessories this way.

Towel tip! Always ensure the fluffy folded size if facing outwards, this ensures a beautifully neat and finished look (yes, that goes for face cloths too!).

There are a few common, mundane but often ‘must-have’ things found in a bathroom: Soap dispenser, shampoos and conditioners, face towels and toilet roll holders. Here are some tips on how to make the most of these items!

Soaps: Opt for refillable dispensers or dishes. Not only does this give you choice in your aesthetic, it’s also great for the planet. Loo rolls.. Nothing takes away from a cool bathroom more than a half-opened bag of loo roll tucked away in the corner. A super simple way to keep your loo roll on hand but disguised could be a thin basket down one side of the toilet, or a funky basket with a lid where rolls are hidden discreetly inside. Toilet brushes.. yikes! We don’t think much about toilet brushes when envisioning the bathroom of our dreams! But hey, every bathroom needs one. Thank goodness nowadays there are an abundance of them to choose from. Brush tip.. opt for a brush with black brissels to hide dirt grime that can build up over time.

It's not all boring! Have fun and add personal accents that make it your own! For example, plants, real or faux, add a wonderful, textural element to any space.

Don't forget to declutter.. Our bathrooms need regular cleaning, the last thing we want to do is move everything around just to mop the floor and wipe the surfaces. An important thing to consider before we ‘over style’ a bathroom space. In order to keep things looking sparkly on a day-to-day basis, I also like to keep a small cleaning spray and cloth in one of the drawers, this helps keep on top of everyday mess.

The best tip of all, trust yourself! Tag us in your newly styled rooms, we can't wait to see the beautfiul spaces you will create.
